Optimising Electrons

Large South African industrials now buy power from half a dozen sources at once. Florion puts the whole picture on one screen — and turns it into the evidence CBAM, carbon tax and ESG reporting will demand.

The large South African energy user has stopped buying electricity and started running a portfolio. Grid power, onsite solar, wheeled renewables, storage, private PPAs — each with its own contract, tariff, time-of-day exposure and counterparty. The data sits in as many systems, reconciled by hand, after the fact.

Florion (florion.co.za) is a homegrown energy intelligence platform built for exactly that mess. It pulls generation, wheeling, storage and consumption into a single, continuously updated view, so an operations team sees a 1% generation variance the day it happens rather than the month it costs money, and a finance team knows which electrons were cheapest, in which hour, and what the position looks like next quarter.

The reporting dividend is what makes it hard to do without. CBAM's definitive phase, South Africa's carbon tax, scope 1/2/3 disclosure and hourly reconciliation across five or six separate bills all demand a granularity spreadsheets cannot produce — and an auditor will not accept a best estimate.

A market this complex rewards whoever can see it clearly. Florion is building that view.
